Military Week – June 3, 2017

Military Week (May 30 – June 3, 2017) started with the Cadet Graduation ceremonies held at the Kenora Armouries on Tuesday, May 30th, 2017. The Band piped the cadets into the Armouries to receive their recognition and merit awards.

On Saturday, June 3, 2017 the Kenora Scottish Pipe Band participated in the 116th Field Battery’s “Freedom of the City” Parade on Kenora’s City Hall. Acting Commanding Officer of 38 Canadian Brigade Group’s Artillery Tactical Group Major Paul Haughey led 60 artillery soldiers down Kenora’s Main Street towards City Hall while exercising the 116th Independent Field Battery’s right to Freedom of the City.

Upon arriving at city hall, and according to ceremonial protocol, acting Mayor Rory McMillan extended words of welcome on behalf of the municipality. During the ritual “Freedom of the City” ceremony, the troops were inspected by the dignitaries and then completed a March Past salute.

In the evening, the 116th Field Battery hosted its Military Ball at the Clarion Lakeside Inn, Kenora, Ontario. Kenora Scottish Pipe-Major piped in the head table and during the main course, the Band marched in and played a mini concert for the assembled diners. Following the concert, the band was graciously invited to join the diners for dessert and coffee. A formal “Salute to the Piper” ceremony was held and, in true highland style, Pipe-Major drank down the quache of Drambuie with gusto.

A presentation was made to the Band and accepted by Kenora Scottish Pipe Major to thank the Kenora Scottish Band for its dedication to the 116th Field Battery over the past years.
