Donald (Don) Bruce Cameron – July 13, 1940 – January 2, 2026
It is with deep sorrow that we say goodbye to a cherished friend of the Kenora Scottish. On January 2, 2026 Don Cameron passed away with his family at his side. Don will be remembered in Kenora and beyond for many things, but mostly his deep involvement and dedication to his home community. Don was active in so many aspects of life in Kenora and was a founder and builder of several local organizations and events. Don was especially proud of his Scottish heritage and started a number of traditional events over the years. The annual Scot’s Night Out to celebrate St. Andrew’s Day, the Lochaneil Society’s annual Burns Supper and the founding of the Kenora Scottish Heritage Society to name a few.
Don was an active organizer and participant over the years. The Kenora Scottish Pipes and Drums was a direct result of Don bringing a bagpipe instructor (Wes Sheppard) to Kenora and forming the Kenora Scottish band. Don was also one of the first to take up the pipes under Wes’s tutelage and performed with the band for a number of years. Scot’s Night Out was a highly anticipated event held at the end of November every year and always packed the hall where folks were treated to a feast of haggis, roast Bubbly Jock, neeps and tatties, Scottish music and dancing. Don’s poetry recited at the annual Lochaneil Burns Supper was legendary. He would keep the attendees in stiches with his wry humour and turns of phrases in his affected Scottish brogue.
Don was always a great supporter of the Kenora Scottish even after he could no longer play his pipes with the band. He will live on in our memory for a long time. Our condolences to Carolyn and the rest of the Cameron family. May he rest in peace.
